Best hiking tips to successfully summit Mt. Whitney in one day. Learn how to avoid and cope with high elevation, maintain your stamina, and stay safe. These article includes some of the best tips gathered from expert mountaineer Cris Hazzard aka "The Hiking Guy."
In 2018, a friend and I attempted the 22 mile hike to summit Mt. Whitney with a day hike permit. The process started a year prior by training and entering the permit lottery in early February. By April, we found out our permit for August had been granted. But we knew that summiting in one day would need more than just physical strength. So we researched for any tips and tricks other hikers might offer. That is how we found the very thoughtful resources provided by Cris Hazzard. The sage advise by "The Hiking Guy" proved to be just what we needed. From what shoes to wear, navigation systems, best napping areas, and thunderstorm awareness, his article was an invaluable resource.
His article goes as far as detailing the best places to hike to acclimate prior to your attempt and the best place to spend the night near Lone Pine. The hike is very doable if you are well prepared, and of course if the weather permits. Remember, your safety is more important than summitting. The mountain will be there for a long time and you can always come back to it as long as you stay safe.
